[As a US naturalized citizen, ‘Travels with Charley’ is one of my favourite travel/Americana books (just behind Least Heat Moon’s ‘Blue Highways’), storytelling supreme, especially with Steinbeck’s personal situation at the time; this building on that exploration and observation - including ‘Log from the Sea of Cortez’ - are truly a joy to see]

“🌊 More than 85 years ago, John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts explored the Sea of Cortez, documenting tidepool life in their landmark book, Sea of Cortez.
⛴️ In 2026, the Green Flash Conservation Science team will retrace their 1940 intertidal expedition to measure 86 years of biodiversity change. Now part of the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network MBON through MBON Pole-to-Pole, the team will resurvey 12 original sites using standardized photo-quadrats and environmental DNA in collaboration with #NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory.
By linking natural history with modern molecular tools, this project connects Baja’s rocky shores to a hemispheric network spanning from Canada to Patagonia—turning a historic expedition into part of a global effort to understand biodiversity change.
From Steinbeck’s tidepools to today’s observing systems, past and present are coming together to inform the future…”
